A COMPOSITE MATERIAL

VARIAN® is a composite material. It is a light, resistant and hybrid material obtained by combining two non-miscible materials: one in fabric and the other in thermoplastic resin.

Resin impregnation consolidates the fabric and guarantees the quality of the composite material. Thermoplastic types of resin have several advantages, in particular in term of environment protection and health, but they are very difficult to impregnate.

Impregnation: more than just coating

The addition of solvent coats the surface of a fabric with thermoplastic resin without penetrating to the core. Once the solvent has evaporated, the fabric is coated with a thin layer of soft resin.

Thanks to its composite yarn, Culture iN can design an almost unlimited range of pre-impregnated fabrics, which it then consolidates in one of the 3 versions to produce the impregnated fabrics, VARIAN® G, S or D.

The Culture iN technology

The presence of core-shell resin creates a weld spot at each interweaving of warp thread with weft thread. The fabric’s weave is firmly set; the yarns no longer move ensuring stronger dimensional stability.

The core-shell resin also guarantees a durable stratum assembly, with fabric and resin blending into one thereby eliminating any delamination: 1+1=1!

A MATERIAL THAT STREAMLINES THE PROCESS

VARIAN® is an exploitable composite with 1 thick fold while a classical composite with discontinuous reinforcements would require about 5 folds for an equivalent flexural rigidity.

The advantage of a single fold? Substantial time saving for the user with “ready-to-use” semi-products, already consolidated by us.

The thick fold, which is an exclusive feature of VARIAN®, allows for partial consolidation on half of the fabric’s thickness and for playing with the texture on one side and the structure on the other – VARIAN S

STANDARD MATERIALS FOR BESPOKE SOLUTIONS

The range of possibilities is unlimited, with variations around:

  • Types of plant fibres
  • Types of thermoplastics
  • Fabric hybridisation (blend of composite/raw yarns in warp and weft)
  • Yarn count
  • Plain, twill, or satin weaves
  • Interplay of colours, textures or transparencies

INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION

Culture iN technology leverages the use of special equipment for the continuous consolidation of VARIAN® over widths of up to 3 m and at production speeds that can supply mass markets.
